Selected works from the Carmarthenshire Museums
A small selection of paintings from the last century by artists
associated with this region of Wales, from Carmarthenshire County
Council's Museum Service collections, chosen with assistance from
our devoted team of volunteers.
This exhibition represents a small selection of paintings in oil and acrylic from Carmarthenshire County Council's Museum Service collections, chosen with assistance from our devoted team of volunteers. The artworks are all from the last century and are painted by artists associated with this region of Wales.
The Museum Service cares for several collections that have been assembled in quite different ways. Most of the County Museum collection was put together by Carmarthenshire Antiquarian Society between 1905 and 1939 under the guidance of its first curator, George Eyre Evans. The Society's vast collection was purchased in 1940 and transferred into public ownership. The museum was previously located on Quay Street in Carmarthen but the premises were soon outgrown by the new museum service. Carmarthenshire County Council then bought the Old Bishop's Palace in Abergwili in 1974 and it opened in 1978 as the new County Museum.
The Parc Howard Museum collection was gifted to the town in 1912, along with the museum premises and the park, by Lady Howard-Stepney and her husband, Sir Stafford Howard, to mark the occasion of their wedding. It is one of Wales's earliest public museums.
The art collections at the County Museum and Parc Howard have grown through gifts from other public collections, private donations and bequests, and carefully judged purchases.
The County Hall collection was established in the 1950s for the specific purpose to encourage art and creativity in the county and has a long history of being curated by the museum service for public exhibitions.
